Officers reported they were notified by a resident who found a car in Hanau marked with reddish liquid

Around fifty automobiles have been marked with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by police.

Vehicles, building surfaces and mailboxes were vandalized, in some cases with swastikas, they reported in a release.

Police say they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a resident observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a reddish fluid.

The substance had been drawn in the pattern of a swastika, they reported.

Officers then discovered numerous other smeared cars and building exteriors in the surrounding area.

Swastikas are illegal in Germany under legislation prohibiting the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.

Officials say preliminary tests indicate the liquid was most likely blood from a person.

"Currently there is no lead as to where it came from; authorities are currently not informed of any harm in connection with the occurrence," they stated.

City officials announced they were attempting "to solve the incident" and have appealed to the public for information.

A high-ranking representative commented the incident rendered him speechless and had to be solved rapidly.

"This act affects the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the extremist attack five years ago," he posted on online, mentioning the killing of nine victims by a assailant targeting people of migrant background in five years prior.
