The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
