This marks the conclusion of a long-standing era for long-running series, with Toei Animation revealing a new production schedule for the beloved series, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and featured numerous filler arcs. Starting in January, once the current storyline wraps up, the animated series will go on a three-month hiatus until spring, when the next major arc kicks off.
New Release Strategy
From now on, One Piece will release two seasons every year for a cap of 26 episodes. The studio states this will enable the anime to “explore further into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — including more content, rhythm, and timing of the source material.” Yet, producers end by promising “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which suggests additional related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, set to premiere during this gap.
Learning from Past Breaks
The One Piece anime had a six-month break that began in October 2024 and ended in April 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to improve the animation quality and let the comic to get further ahead to avoid a faster anime pace and repetitive summaries. The anime greatly benefited from this break, and it has been able to deliver viewers with numerous fight scenes, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than ever before.
Embracing Seasonal Format
Although a few summary installments appeared during the recent run, the benefits of this updated approach far surpass the odd pause in the story. This also gives the original work, which is currently in the thick of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the anime. According to the announcement, this may lead to one episode of the series adapting one chapter, with some instead handling more material or additional to compensate for scheduling.
It's the end of an era for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the last big series to ditch the traditional method of creation, which prioritized being on air for almost the entire year. This explains why iconic series such as Naruto, and of course One Piece have so many side stories, and the quality of the art can vary widely between installments and the following. Nowadays, anime production is organized in cours, with a couple maximum releasing each year, allowing for better quality and greater accuracy to the original work.
