The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Sees Significant Alliance Formed By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The late summer revolt was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the New Political Partnership

According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Government Discussions Taking Place

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several leading political leaders. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
