A recent study suggests that patients who come off popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users buying such drugs need to be aware of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with older methods.
Scientists note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Experts suggest the mode of action of the injections explains the amplified weight return.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this medication means hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Condition?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
Users who have discontinued the medication describe a intense return of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Use
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Use is greater among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle management.
